Charity Spotlight: Special Olympics Maryland
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
After 40 years of dedicated service, Special Olympics Maryland continues to lead the way in changing attitudes, and creating positive change for Maryland’s children and adults with intellectual disabilities. And the reason why is simple – what we do is not just nice. It’s important.
Each and every day, a child or adult with intellectual disabilities reaches a new milestone as a result of his or her involvement with SOMD – living proof that our mission IS working. These accomplishments may not make the evening news, or be celebrated by scores of screaming fans, but to the athlete who scores the winning basket at the state championship game, it is no different than swishing the series-clinching shot in Game 7 of the NBA Finals – and it is a moment that feels just as perfect.
The Finest of Fine Print
In the event of cancellation due to crazy circumstances (random hurricane, tornado, or Marshmallow man), we’ll send you an email with a postponement date. Your safety and the fairness of the competition is our main priority.
